Guide to France

For the past few years I have been looking around the web for decent Guides to France, although there are plenty to choose from, most seem to be poorly written, and badly researched with few or no images galleries of the towns and landscapes that make France such an appealing holiday destination.

It was this that inspired us to launch France Self Catering with its regional guide, city guide and attractions, food and drink and climate information.

Some of the note worthy regions (and most popular) are ile de France, Rhone AlpesLanguedoc Roussillon, Brittany and Burgundy.

We have also created a synopsis of each of the cities in France including Ajaccio and Amiens to name a few.

Adventures in France

Since a child I have always got excited in preparation of any trip abroad, France however always brings out the worst in this curiosity habit.

I would spend hours trawling through dusty books and road maps searching for the strangest towns, oddest buildings and coolest views.

In one of those moments of curiosity I discovered Carcassonne (Languedoc-Roussillon), ok so it's a huge castle, possibly the largest I have ever seen, so how could you miss it!, I am not sure but it still took be from the age of twelve to 33 before I went there.

This brings me to my main point about France, it's the most diverse, surprising and inspirational country on the planet with hundreds of amazing places both natural and man made that will take your breath away (and that's excluding the cuisine).

My parents insisted on taking me on my sister on these long trips in the family's Ford Cortina Ghia, cross country - avoiding the tourist traps, educating us on-route about France's colorful history, the thing is there was just so many things to see, tales to be told and views to experience that every time we went, we never got further South than the Ardeche (Rhone Alpes) visting wonders like Vallon-Pont-d'Arc and in the French German regions like Alsace visiting Strasbourg with its fairytale style half timbered buildings.

The Christmas markets in Strasbourg are magical, and are not to be missed especially if you taking kids the only pace that can rival it for magic is Lapland (if you have deep pockets).
